How long can humans hold their breath?
Untrained adults average around 30 seconds. Certified freedivers train past two minutes. Here is what the measured numbers and certification standards actually show.
The short answer
Most untrained adults hold their breath for 30 to 60 seconds. Freediving certifications ask for 90 seconds to 3 minutes 30 seconds, depending on the level. The AIDA-approved static apnea records stand at 11 minutes 35 seconds for men and 9 minutes 22 seconds for women.
Those numbers describe what people have done under specific conditions. They are not a target, and they do not tell you what is safe for you today.
Practise alone only on dry land, seated or lying somewhere stable. Never hold your breath in a pool, bath, or open water without a trained buddy watching the whole attempt and the recovery.

The middle rows are the useful ones. Certification standards are published pass marks, not survey averages, so they show what structured training reliably produces in people who complete a course. The record rows show the outer edge of the discipline and nothing about a normal practice session.
Why the untrained number varies so much
A 2024 study in the Ethiopian Journal of Health Sciences measured voluntary breath-holding in 78 healthy untrained young adults aged 19 to 23. The resting mean was 29.67 seconds, with a standard deviation of 11.55 seconds. That spread matters more than the mean: a normal, healthy person in that sample might sit anywhere from roughly 18 to 41 seconds.
The same study measured the same people under different conditions and got different results — 26.21 seconds during an isometric handgrip, 33.08 seconds during a mental arithmetic task. A separate study of healthy adults found mean breath-holding time varied with body mass index, from 44.29 seconds in the normal-weight group down to 32.43 seconds in the obese group.
So the honest version is: your resting number depends on how relaxed you are, what you did in the last ten minutes, and factors you cannot change today. A single attempt is a weak measurement.
What actually rises when people train
Rising carbon dioxide contributes to the urge to breathe during a hold. Oxygen level, lung volume, and respiratory-muscle activity also affect where the hold breaks. Training changes your response to those signals rather than adding air to your lungs.
Research on apnea training and performance is mixed and protocol-specific. Reviews report possible benefits for some outcomes while calling for better-defined protocols and more evidence. No study supports a universal percentage gain or a fixed timeline, so treat any program promising "add two minutes in six weeks" as marketing.
Never hyperventilate before a hold. Over-breathing lowers carbon dioxide and delays the urge to breathe without stopping oxygen from falling, which raises the risk of blackout.
Finding your own number safely
- Sit or lie down on dry land, away from water, with nothing you could fall against.
- Breathe normally for a few minutes. No rapid or repeated deep breaths.
- Hold once, and stop at the first strong urge rather than pushing to a maximum.
- Repeat on three separate days and use the middle value, not the best one.
- Stop immediately if you feel faint, confused, or unwell.
Contractions are not a timer. Their onset, strength, and pattern vary between people and between attempts, and they do not tell you how much oxygen is left.
Once you have a baseline, conservative CO2 tables are a more useful practice than repeated maximum attempts, because they let you train the response to the urge to breathe without making every round a limit test. The full training guide covers the progression.
