What is static apnea?

Static apnea is the freediving discipline in which a person holds their breath without swimming for the longest controlled time they can manage. In competition, the athlete remains at the water's surface with the airways submerged. A dry static breath hold uses a similar motionless format on land, but it is practice, not an official water performance.

The CMAS discipline guide defines static apnea, or STA, as a maximum-duration breath hold at the surface. AIDA also recognizes STA as a competitive discipline.

Static apnea compared with other disciplines

Static apnea measures time. Dynamic apnea measures horizontal distance underwater, with or without fins. Depth disciplines measure how far a diver descends and returns under a specific set of rules.

The lack of swimming does not make static apnea risk-free. Oxygen continues to fall during the hold. In water, loss of consciousness can obstruct the airway and lead to drowning.

Never practise static apnea in water alone. Use a trained buddy who understands freediving supervision and rescue. A lifeguard watching a whole pool is not a substitute for dedicated supervision.

What happens during a static hold?

During any breath hold, the body keeps using oxygen and producing carbon dioxide. Rising carbon dioxide contributes to respiratory drive and discomfort. Oxygen, lung volume, respiratory-muscle activity, and other signals also influence when the hold ends.

Longer holds often include involuntary breathing movements. Freedivers usually call them contractions, although several respiratory muscles can contribute. Their onset varies and does not reveal a fixed oxygen level or promise a safe amount of time remaining. The guide to breath-hold contractions explains that distinction.

Hyperventilation can delay the urge to breathe even as oxygen falls. Never use repeated deep or rapid breaths to extend a static attempt.

How dry static practice differs from a maximum attempt

A maximum attempt asks for the longest possible hold on that day. A training session can use shorter, repeatable holds and planned recovery instead. The result is easier to compare because every round does not depend on forcing a personal best.

Dry practice should take place seated or lying somewhere a loss of balance cannot cause injury. Review the complete session before starting. Stop if you feel dizzy or unwell, or if recovery feels abnormal.

The breath-hold timer records a dry attempt. For repeated submaximal rounds, first compare the structure of CO2 and O2 tables.

Does static apnea improve freediving?

Static practice can help a diver observe breath-hold sensations in a controlled setting. Research results depend on the participants and measured outcome. The protocol matters too. The evidence does not support a universal schedule or a guaranteed increase in time.

Static performance omits movement and depth. It also omits equalization, buoyancy and in-water rescue skills. Someone preparing to freedive needs qualified instruction and supervised water practice, not only a longer dry breath hold.
